Learning a new language should be a joyful and engaging experience for children. At Yeah Chinese, we are passionate about creating fun and effective resources to help young learners on their Mandarin journey. That's why we are thrilled to announce the release of our latest creation: a vibrant and catchy bilingual song all about colors!
Our new song, What Colors Do You Like? (《你喜欢什么颜色?》), is a musical adventure designed to captivate young minds and make learning colors in both English and Chinese an absolute delight. The song provides a fantastic opportunity for children to learn essential color vocabulary in a fun and memorable way.
The Power of Music in Language Learning
Music is a powerful tool for language acquisition, especially for children. Research shows that music can enhance memory and learning, making it easier for children to recall new words and phrases (Thram, 2022).
When it comes to learning Mandarin Chinese, music is particularly beneficial. Mandarin is a tonal language, meaning the pitch of a word can change its meaning. This can be a tricky concept for beginners, but songs naturally incorporate these tones into their melodies, helping children to learn the correct pronunciation in a fun and intuitive way. Singing along allows children to practice producing these sounds in a low-pressure and enjoyable environment.
Bilingual songs are especially effective for young learners. The familiar words in their native language provide a scaffold, making the new vocabulary in the second language less intimidating and easier to understand (Lems, 2018).

Reinforce Learning with Our Interactive Tutorial Video
To complement our new song, we've also created a fun and interactive Colors Tutorial Video. This video is the perfect resource to help students practise, recall, and review the color vocabulary they learned from the song.
The tutorial is broken down into easy-to-follow parts:
Part 1: Say It (读一读) - Children are introduced to each color, its character, and its Pinyin pronunciation.
Part 2: What Color Is This? (这是什么颜色?) - A fun quiz to test recognition and recall.
Part 3: Find It (找一找) - An engaging game where students have to find the correct colored object.
Part 4: Which Color is Missing? (哪个颜色不见了?) - A memory game that challenges students to remember which color has disappeared.
Part 5: Answer It (说一说) - Encourages students to express their own preferences, asking "What colors do you like?" and "What colors do you dislike?".
This video serves as an excellent additional resource for teachers in the classroom and for parents at home to solidify learning in a playful way.

Bring the Colors to Life in Your Classroom
Our new color song and tutorial video are more than just fun content; they are versatile teaching tools that can be integrated into a variety of classroom activities. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Color Scavenger Hunt: After listening to the song, challenge your students to a color scavenger hunt! Call out a color from the song in Chinese (e.g., "hóng sè" - red) and have them find an object of that color in the classroom.
Rainbow Sensory Bins: Create sensory bins filled with different colored items like rice, beads, or fabric scraps. As students explore the bins, you can play the song in the background and encourage them to name the colors they find in Chinese.
Color Sorting Games: Provide a collection of colorful objects and have students sort them into groups based on color. You can label containers with the Chinese characters for each color to reinforce their learning.
Art and Craft Activities: Let creativity flow with color-themed art projects. Students can draw their favorite things and label the colors in Chinese. You can also have them create their own color mixing experiments to learn about primary and secondary colors.
"I Spy" with Colors: Play a classic game of "I Spy" using the Chinese color vocabulary from the song. For example, you can say "wǒ kàn dào..." (I see...) followed by a color in Chinese.
By incorporating our new bilingual song and tutorial into your lessons, you can create a vibrant and engaging learning environment that will have your students excited to learn Chinese.
We invite you to listen to "What Colors Do You Like?" and practice with our tutorial video to explore the wonderful world of colors together. Happy teaching!
